SIMULATION EXERCISE TO FACE THE EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI THREAT IN PADANG

img_wp_hen_2Padang City (29/08): West Sumatra Provincial government held disaster simulation exercise in Padang City involving local government & agencies on Thursday, (29/08). This Simulation theme: “Through Disaster Relief Exercise, BPBD of  West Sumatra Province and All Related Agencies Ready to Cooperate In Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation of Earthquake and Tsunami ” which involves the public and private sector organizations.
This simulation exercise was held with the scenario of earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale. This magnitude is a scientific estimate stating that West Sumatera province could potentially experience an earthquake in that scale in the future. If it actually happened, that earthquake can cause a tsunami on the coast of West Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands .
This simulation exercise, in particular, witnessed by the invited guests from National and International participants of Concept Development Conference &  Initial Planning Conference  (CDC/IPC) whose currently preparing similar training on Megathrust Mentawai Disaster Relief Exercise ( MM DiREx ) in 2014 involving the international community.
According to the Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of West Sumatra Province Yazid Fadhli, this simulation exercise  is an opportunity to practice the contingency plans that had been prepared in response to the devastating earthquake and tsunami . This simulation exercise only shows emergency preparedness and response phase to the termination of the emergency response. Yet all parties involved in this simulation exercise.

On the other hand, the Primary Inspector of the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Bintang Susmanto said: “the future needs more extensive involvement from the private sector. Disaster management needs a shared responsibility: from government, civil society and the business or private sector”. Bintang Susmanto also stressed the need for media center as part of the command post exercise where all disaster management information are taken from one single door.
On the same occasion, the Head of Education and Training BNPB Wisnu Widjaja said that the media should also play roles, not only to document this simulation exercise but also to take one of the important parts in the implementation of MM DiREx simulation exercise.
The Vice Governor of West Sumatra , Muslim Kasim, accompanied by the Primary Inspectorate BNPB and the Head of Education and Training BNPB attended this simulation exercise. Representatives from Ministries/Agencies, Military/Police, as well as several international organizations such as the international delegates from the U.S., Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam also attend this simulation exercise.
