Jakarta (05/09) The results of the Self Evacuation WG (SE-Working Group) meeting on geologists studies indicate a real threat faced by the people of West Sumatra that is the Mentawai megathrust. This region is claimed to experience the threat of potential earthquakes with magnitude of 8.9 scales Richter that would trigger a tsunami in the coastal areas of West Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands. While on the other hand, much vulnerability is still found in this region, causing high casualties and damage/loss for physical, economic, social, psychology, environment and other aspects.
When the threat of this disaster really happens, the public and school children who were in the coastal region (prone areas) will suffer the worst impacts. To build community preparedness, some actors (government, business sectors and society) had done some activities along with the community. However, with such magnitude of the threat and potential affected areas, those effort been done was still not enough. A lot of efforts to build a preparedness to reduce the potential loss of life and damage, particularly to the public and school children still have to be done.
While on the capacity aspect, West Sumatra has quite many colleges and social institutions that have awareness, knowledge and skills to increase capacity of communities and school children to be better prepared to face the threat of earthquakes and tsunamis. It is also one of the implementation efforts of Tri Dharma University, which is dedicated to the community. Therefore, in cooperation with many sectors, BNPB intends to facilitate effort to increase the capacity.
The purpose of the activities to be done by The Community Empowerment Directorate (under Deputy of Prevention and Preparedness) are to increase knowledge and awareness of school teachers and volunteers in building community preparedness to face the threat of earthquakes and tsunamis, so that the outcomes of these activities can create a group of teachers and volunteers who have knowledge on the threat of earthquakes and tsunami as well as the to build preparedness in reducing the risk of future disasters.
The implementation of these activities will be in three locations where as follows:
City Hall (Padang Pasir county, Purus county), Lorong Belati and Bungo Pasang. The training participants’ sum of 150 people divided into two sessions so that the composition of each activity amounted of 75 people consisting of teachers and volunteers. The Training Speakers will be taken from BNPB, Government Institute/Ministry and NGOs who are members of the disaster preparedness working group. (Ros)
