(12/09) Lots of people will agree if it is said that Indonesia is one of the world’s disaster prone country namely, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions, cyclones, epidemics, malnutrition, conflicts between communities, terror and riots. One of the very natures of Indonesian society is the spirit of ‘gotong–royong’ and to help each other. Soon after disaster hit, people will seek to help others affected by the disaster, and where relatively large scale disaster, the government will always be responsible and took the responsibility. Tambrauw district is one of the districts in the West Papua province, Indonesia. The central government is in Fef. The Basic Law of the forming of Tambrauw district was the Republic of Indonesia Act Year of 2008 Number 56 with the amendment of Article 3 paragraph (1) in accordance with the Constitutional Court Decision No. 127/PUU-VII/2009, dated January 25, 2009. Moreover, Nimrot Waniopi, STH, the Head of Emergency Response BPBD Tambrauw, was looking at the Tambrauw geographical conditions and vulnerability towards natural disasters such as earthquake and tsunami. It is necessary for local government through the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to deal with disaster risk reduction and preparedness. In addition to preparing the communities, BPBDs also at least have to implement emergency preparedness in the event of a natural disaster.
National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has provided logistic and equipment support throughout BPBDs in Indonesia, where the equipment can be used in emergency preparedness and response during a disaster. BNPB support equipments such as emergency shelter (tents), transportation, Mobile Kitchen Units, communication equipment, boats and other equipments. In order to support the readiness of BPBD Tambrauw, West Papua province in facing the threat of disaster, it is necessary to increase BPBDs capacity through training and disaster management teams involved in using the emergency response equipment that has been distributed by BNPB. Education and Training Center (PUSDIKLAT PB) BNPB working with BPBD Tambrauw West Papua done some Disaster Relief Operations Technical Training to increase capacity BPBD Tambrauw West Papua in disaster management, so as to reduce the risk and impact of disasters expand.
The training objectives were to increase participants’ knowledge of disaster management and the emergency response to the threats of disasters.
