The Chief of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Syamsul Maarif welcomed the working visit of the Commander of United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), William M. Fraser III, on Wednesday (18/9) in BNPB Building, Jalan Juanda, Jakarta. USTRANSCOM working visit is intended to improve understanding and cooperation between BNPB and UNSTRANSCOM.
On this occasion Syamsul Maarif share knowledge and experiences on disaster management in Indonesia. In addition, he also said the challenges to be faced, in particular how to build a comprehensive strategy in disaster management.
Meanwhile, William Fraser III contended the importance of increasing the capability and capacity in disaster response. According to him, increasing the capability and the capacity can be obtained through cooperation in joint exercises.
Related to the cooperation between the two sides, BNPB expect support in joint exercises Megathrust Mentawai Disaster Relief Exercise (MM DiREx) 2014. Wisnu Widjaja, the Head of Education and Training Center BNPB explained that this joint exercise is meant to test one of mechanism of local, national, and international emergency response system as well as how to manage international aid to Indonesia.
“It’s a huge exercise in which ASEAN member countries and 8 non-ASEAN EAS countries, such as USA, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Japan, Korea, Japan, and India will be involved in this exercise, as well as learning to address emergency response in remote areas including “Wisnu Widjaja added.
Adding explanation on MM DiREx, Syamsul Maarif also said that Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, is very concerned for disaster management and make the region a peaceful region. “Therefore, we invite countries to come, we will show it to the world, together we serve humanity”, said Syamsul Maarif.
In response, William Fraser said that they will support the delivery of this joint exercise and cooperation to improve the capability and capacity in future exercises.
During the visit, this four-star commander of USTRANSCOM expressed his gratitude to the Head of BNPB for his acceptance and sharing of knowledge and experience in the disaster management.
In addition to military functions, USTRANSCOM also support humanitarian missions and joint disaster management exercise. Several missions had been undertaken by USTRANSCOM such as the Haiti earthquake, Pakistan floods, and oil pollution in Deep Horizon Gulf US. (TY).
