MATARAM – Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) should be a joint effort, both at national and local levels. Disaster Risk Reduction is a very strategic investment, considering the large impact of natural disasters. “Losses due to Indonesia disaster after the tsunami in Aceh until 2012, were 95.96 billion. UN agency, United Nations Strategic for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) defined that on October 13th is a global disaster risk reduction month. All over the world, this month is celebrated as DRR month with various activities. 2013 theme carried by UNISDR is on Living with Disability and Disasters. A Disaster Risk Reduction co memory month has been started since 1989. This event is a way to promote a culture of disaster risk reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.
In Indonesia there are basically a lot of DRR actors who participated in the PRB campaign, including the observer of gender issues, disabled, children’s, and so forth. But the challenge is that its implementation is still carried out sectorally and separately.
“DRR month could be a forum for all stakeholders to share information and coordinate with each other to develop network with one another. For this reason, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the National Platform, will hold a meeting as well as organizing the DRR Forum on the anniversary month of October 2013, “said Dr. Syamsul Maarif. Disaster Management requires the cooperation and support of all parties. DRR month that take place from 7th till 11th October 2013 in the Mataram, NTB, will deliver compelling variety of activities, including the launch of research from 12 universities in Indonesia, such as the master plan for tsunami conducted by the University Syahkuala, earthquake master plan undertaken by Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB), and other researches that will be an overall picture of disaster master plan in Indonesia
In addition this research, the launch of new books about the disaster, was also on the agenda in this activity. Learning from Rokatenda Volcano Eruption disaster, will be specifically discussed by Syamsul Maarif, also some other books that will be launched is the National Assessment Report (NAR), The Role of the Mosque in Disaster Situation in Indonesia, published by UNOCHA and LPBI NU, which calls for humanity Work written by Dompet Dhuafa team towards Disaster Management Local Wisdom in Sumatra issued by PKPU.
As the peak of the DRR Month, the DRR forum meetings, which in this activity all the elements come together and determine repopulating future strategy and to explore the potential and experience of the field. The forum is expected to result in an important note to make Indonesia’s strategy towards Indonesia Strong Nation.
